✦ Mindfulness

We spend a surprising amount of our lives somewhere other than where we are.
Our minds drift into the future, imagining what might happen, worrying about what could go wrong, or planning for some distant version of ourselves.
"I'll take that trip tomorrow."
"I'll go back to school and get my degree when my daughter is older and more self-sufficient."
"I'll sign up for that dating app next year."
Other times, we find ourselves trapped in the past, replaying old mistakes, reliving regrets, or wishing things had happened differently.
"I should have chosen a different career, but I'm too old to start over."
But the truth is that neither the past nor the future is where life actually exists. It isn't where the magic happens.
The past is real in the sense that it happened, but it no longer exists except in memory. We can learn from it, reflect on it, and draw wisdom from it — but we cannot change it.
The future, on the other hand, is largely a concept. It exists in our imagination. We can anticipate it, prepare for it, and influence it through our actions — but it has not yet arrived. More importantly, it is constantly changing. Every decision we make, every new piece of information we gain, and every unexpected event that occurs reshapes what the future might become.
"All we truly have is this moment — the present."
This doesn't mean we shouldn't plan for the future. In fact, planning is essential. Nearly every meaningful accomplishment begins with a plan. An architect wouldn't build a building without a blueprint. An entrepreneur wouldn't launch a business without a strategy. An adventurer wouldn't start a journey without at least some idea of where they were headed.
The mistake is not planning.
The mistake is believing the plan is reality — concrete, immovable, and final.
Plans are useful because they give us direction, but they are not guaranteed. Life has a way of introducing variables we never anticipated. New opportunities appear. Unexpected challenges emerge. We gain knowledge that changes our understanding. What seemed like the perfect path yesterday may no longer be the best path tomorrow.
This is why flexibility is so important.
Rather than becoming attached to a specific outcome, we should become committed to a direction. We should expect our plans to evolve. We should be willing to move the target as circumstances change and as we learn more about ourselves and the world around us.
My time in software development and IT project management has taught me to be empirical with all things in my life. The best software teams understand empiricism through agile development. They don't create a massive plan and assume every detail will unfold exactly as expected. They used to — it was called Waterfall, and it was painful. But that's a whole other blog I could write.
Instead, they build, test, learn, and adapt. Each iteration reveals new information, and that information informs the next step. They fail — and they fail fast and often. On purpose. Because failing is feedback. It's learning, inspecting, and adapting.
Life works much the same way.
We move forward, gather experience, encounter successes and failures, and adjust accordingly. Every mistake contains a lesson. Every setback offers information. Every unexpected turn teaches us something we didn't know before.
But all of that learning can only happen in the present moment.
We cannot act in the past. We cannot act in the future. We can only act now.
The present is where decisions are made.
The present is where growth occurs.
The present is where relationships are built, opportunities are seized, and experiences are lived.
When we obsess over the future, we often trade today's reality for tomorrow's uncertainty. When we dwell on the past, we surrender today's possibilities to yesterday's events.
Neither serves us.
"Learn from the past. Plan for the future. But live in the present."
Take the next step forward.
Not the hundredth step. Not the imaginary step that exists months or years from now.
Just the next one.
Because while the past is gone and the future is unwritten, this moment is real. And this moment is where your life is happening. The present is where the magic happens. And life is oh so magical.
